A friend of mine took a quick look at my infant blog and wanted to know where my iphone rant was. Well this isn’t a rant but here is my story – and I’m sticking to it.
The much awaited and anticipated release of the iphone will find my husband sitting in a line. If you knew him you would know that this is something he simply doesn’t do.
But planning? He could put that on his resume.
He will be armed with sunscreen, a nicotine patch (I pointed out that other people in line might not be happy to be surrounded in smoke), a portable chair which was a random gift I received from a previous web development gig, some reading material and lots of hope. He has been on the forums for weeks. He knows everything there is to know about how to set it up and what it is supposed to do.
He casually ventured, around midafternoon today, that maybe there wouldn’t be a line and maybe he didn’t have to worry.
Ha. He is going to be competing with people whose only experience with camping out has been designed to secure concert tickets.
Concert tickets vs iphone = no contest. He’d better get in line now.
Personally I have a teeny phone that fits in my pocket as phones that you actually use should and a kick-ass video ipod that I love.
But that doesn’t mean that if I got one as a gift I’d turn it down.
Update: He just got in line. It’s about 1:30. He is number 6 which we are thinking is a virtual lock in.
4 and a half hours to go. . .
It’s about 4:30 now and my husband must have chosen his iphone outlet with care. There are only about 25 people in line at the store he is staking out. There is a whole community of people involved in this thing and everyone is being very civilized. Places are saved when people make donut/coffee runs or need to go to the bathroom.
I pointed out that with a line that reasonable no one is feeling desperate. It’s all a bit festive.
Probably not so at South Shore Mall or Attleboro where I hear the lines stretch quite a long way. . . .
So how is it? I’m totally getting on too, but figured I’d wait a few months till the bugs were worked out.
Any bugs to report?
Well there is the lack of custom ring tone problem which makes me crazy; http://weberratica.wordpress.com/2007/07/03/no-custom-itunes-ringtones/. I think it is important to check the signal strength of AT+T if you have to change carriers. (I did).
I wish that you could set up a playlist specifically for the iphone/ipod as you can for the regular ipod.
Other than that the use of screen real estate is what we always wanted to see on the video ipod. It uses all of the available real estate.
It’s a beautiful thing.
